There are a couple of aspects of power consumed by CMOS integrated circuits.

  1. Static Power – This is the leakage power which is primarily due to sub-threshold currents in a CMOS gate.


      Leakage Power = V * I


      1. Dynamic Power – There are two types of dynamic power

(a) Internal Dynamic Power – Power dissipated due to charging of internal loads and the short-circuit between N and P gates

IP = ½ * C(internal) * V2 * f + V * I(short)

(b) Switching Power – Power dissipating due to charging of external loads
